Narcolepsy Network recognizes that some people feel more comfortable with non-traditional approaches to treatment of medical problems. We are not going to try to dissuade you from following a course of therapy that you have faith in.

There is currently no cure for narcolepsy. If someone tells you that they have a cure, they are not telling the facts. Be suspicious of anyone who says that they have a treatment or cure that modern medicine just does not understand, fears, wants to suppress or is miraculous. These people are almost always delusional or charlatans or quacks.

Some natural remedies have real medical value. Many modern medicines have their origins in some of the same sources as these herbal and homeopathic treatments. Aspirin and willow bark tea both contain the same active ingredient, salicylic acid or its derivatives. Foxglove and Digitalis both take advantage of digitalis glycosides to treat heart conditions. Opium, heroin and morphine all come from the same plant. The major differences between the herbal remedies and the manufactured ones is that the manufactured ones have consistent levels of active ingredients, are checked for purity, have expiration dates and can be tracked back through not just to the manufacturer but also to the source of the raw materials. Herbal treatments can vary in potency depending on how and where they were grown, the parts of the plant used, how and when it was harvested, how it was processed, how it was stored, how old it is and documentation that it is free of contamination.

We want you to take the same care, caution and common sense as someone should take when they are using manufactured medicines. Make sure that whatever you use comes from a reputable source. If you are using natural substances with or without modern medicine make sure that your treating physician, pharmacist, herbal practitioner and herbal dispenser all know the things are that you are taking. This can help prevent over medication and dangerous interactions.

Just because a treatment is natural does not mean that it does not have some risk. Any substance that has the power to affect one disorder has the possibility of causing other problems and side effects.

Prayer, meditation, imagery and a positive outlook can have positive effect on medical problems. They can add to the healing effect of medical treatment.

Acupuncture, acupressure, massage, manipulation and related treatments can have positive effects on some disorders or their symptoms. This does not mean that they have a lasting effect on narcolepsy.
